iCloud error This email address is not available for use as an Apple ID

Trying to change the Apple ID email address in iPhone for iCloud and getting this message? -'This email address is not available. Choose a different address.' Then you are not alone.

The popup saying 'This email address is not available for use as an Apple ID. You may already have an Apple ID associated with this address. Please try again or sign in using your existing Apple ID.' is faced by many Apple iPhone users and can be solved.

The error basically indicates that the address is already taken or not valid for use and should try again with different emails.

This email address is not available for use as an Apple ID

The dialogue appears when changing the email address for the iCloud account with an alternate email address.

Try these solutions to fix this problem.

Remove alternate email from Apple ID

Please, ensure that the email you are trying with is not a secondary to any other email that is already in use at Apple. If this is the case, then you should remove that as an alternate email from Apple ID. To do this follow the given steps,
  1. In 'My Apple ID' go to 'Manage'
  2. Now sign in.
  3. You will see a list of emails. From here you can remove an email address associated with your ID.
  4. Delete emails that you don't want to be listed as the alternate.
The request to delete will take some days. After success, try again with a new iCloud account.

Get support from Apple

Many users solved this issue using Apple support personnel. For this,
  1. Visit the official website (www.apple.com).
  2. Go to 'Support' > 'Apple ID' > 'Contact support'

Change @gmail.com version

If you are using Gmail, then it will have @gmail.com at the end of it. You can change that with @googlemail.com. Hope this will solve your problem.

  1. Not trying to change it. I'm trying to add one. The note says ""These phone numbers and email addresses can be used to reach you with iMessages, FaceTime, Game Center, and more. No change. Just add. Get the message. And thousands of threads such as this all talk about changing. Nope. Adding. Just like the note on the iPhone says.
